    My Students

    I am teaching a grade 8 math class, with 29 students. In addition to the academic and behavioural variances typically seen in a class of this size, grade 8 students come from a number of different schools and backgrounds. Grade 8 is a critical year, often setting the tone for how interested and motivated students are in learning math, and it is important in terms of developing a strong foundation for senior math courses to build upon. It can be a time when students self-define their own capabilities within the confines of being either "good" or "bad" at math, rather than being on a long-term learning continuum. Grade 8 provides a window to capture students and inspire them. The ramifications can be significant.

    How will this project impact them?

    By using an iPad to electronically create and post lessons to a website, parents, students, LST teachers and tutors can be kept up to date, on a daily basis, with classroom learning material, expectations and homework. The notes created using GoodNotes (an iPad App), are colourful, and can include annotated PDF's, highlighting key information more effectively and graphically than students would be capable of recording using more traditional methods. The website offers LST teachers and parents an easily accessible resource that can be used to provide extra support as individual needs arise, rather than waiting until math tests are completed and problems and misconceptions become compounded. A second iPad would be useful to implement Socrative.com (another iPad App). By allowing a virtual classroom to be set up for formative assessment purposes, teachers can obtain immediate feedback, and in turn, adjust lessons accordingly, to maximize student learning and interest. Lastly, these tools provide a platform that students relate to more easily than the traditional form of pen/paper and a white board and they allow students to develop technical skills that they will likely use in the workforce upon graduation.

The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
