    My Students

Having a number of students with learning disabilities and others with intellectual disabilities, they require hands-on learning. When asked about their interests, the students had expressed a great deal in outdoor learning opportunities; gardening, looking after animals, and maintaining a green environment. The students are always excited about finding more opportunities and ways of sustaining the environment. They are greatly reflective and enthused learners, despite the challenges they face.

How will this project impact them?

With all the constant efforts and time dedicated by my students, even outside of class time, they are finding it more difficult to ensure the plants in the greenhouse will survive over winter by adding growing lights and summer by adding the watering system. In analyzing their requests, the greenhouse will be a more valuable and long lasting resource to them. With the resources I am requesting, students in my class will be able to utilize the greenhouse space more effectively all year-round. My students have gained a strong interest in incorporating a hydroponic system, they would need some additional materials to complete this project. By integrating watering and lighting systems, students will be able to see the fruits of their labour.

    Project Report

    from Ms. Murad

As a class of Sustainable Resources, the students used their Brookswood outdoor space to landscape, plant and maintain their crops. Presenting them with the project of beginning their very own sustainable system, the students were excited and enthused. Each class, they built the different elements and components of their hydroponic Dutch bucket system. Alas, that excitement did not last as they began to realize their system would not work without a pump. Much appreciation and thanks to your support, the students’ hard work had paid off. They were very excited to complete the hydroponic system; using the pumps in the water reservoir and the other pumps to supply the fertilized water to their tomato plants, a closed circuit for the system was achieved. Their planted tomatoes are growing beautifully with the installation of the supplies. We are currently waiting for maintenance to come in and install the overhead lights and sprinkler controller to enable the students to better maintain the greenhouse and outdoor space during the breaks from school. Due to your help and support the students have decided to challenge themselves and take it a step further, currently building an aquaponic system.
Caiden: "we go in to check the greenhouse outside of class time, we see the plants growing in the hydroponics bucket system and it is all going so well."
Sondra: "It is really incredible and inspiring to see that we built this system, and it is something popular among agriculturists"
Meaghan: " This is so incredible, we want to set up the aquaponics system"
