    My Students

The community garden project would provide an opportunity for all students at the school to take part in growing and cultivating plants, and would provide rich learning opportunities that tie in with our new provincial redesigned curriculum in various subject areas. Math we will explore measurement. Science, we will explore the lifecycle of plants from seed to harvest. After harvest, we will learn composting and the environmental impact of plant growth and the importance of conservation.

How will this project impact them?

A key priority for me is ensuring that kids learn where their food comes from and to understand the process of going from plant/seed to plate. As stated in the NEW curriculum document: competencies come into play when students are engaged in “doing” in any area of learning. This includes activities where students use thinking, collaboration and communication to solve problems, address issues or make decisions. The ultimate goal is for learners to employ the core competences every day in school and in life, and for the core competencies to be an integral part of the learning in all curriculum areas.” This project will provide short term (seasonal learning) but will also provide long term benefits by building community teams to sustain the growing throughout summer months. Students gain the concept of conservation, food production, sustainability and their overall impact on earth.

The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds.
