  • My Class Needs SPRK Sphero robotics to engage students in coding for math!

    Launched October 18th, 2016 Project Deadline May 19th, 2017
Classroom Size 24 Students School Size 430 Students

    My Students

We are a city school within a small school board district in central Ontario. Our students are eager, determined and motivated to learn. I would like to provide them with more opportunity to understand mathematical concepts in a more authentic 21st-century environment. We are a group of staff and students who are limited with funding to provide technology resources. With our unique group of explorers we have specific learning accommodations, modifications and needs that range from primary to advanced learners.

How will this project impact them?

I would like to expand on and allow my students to code because learning to program robots would develop their perseverance and problem solving skills. I have decided to use the Sphero SPRK+. Learning to code with the SPRK+ promotes learning within the major stem sciences as well as the liberal arts with an emphasis on creativity and critical thinking skills. The skills picked up during coding – creative thinking, reasoning, collaboration, and self-expression – would be a good foundation for any future endeavors. Students can program the robots to respond to commands. Coding helps students think differently, understand how things around them work, and gives them the power to create and succeed in a digital world. Allowing my students to code during our math classes will make math and learning hands on and surprisingly authentic. Students will be learning and growing and not even know it!

    Project Report

    from Ms. Mask

Thank you! Wow we have had an adventure so far! We are using our new set of Spheros to design and create chariots! We have coded a track and races are to take place next week. Students have had an opportunity to design, create, build, code, problem solve, measure and so much more. We have only dabbled in the endless opportunities our students will have for years to come to learn to code. Our students learning has been enhanced by making it meaningful but most importantly we have increased engagement and problem solving. From working with peers, design and build problems, calculations and measurements we have experience it all. The look and excitement on our students faces speaks volumes. To the point they don't want summer to come as they want to keep learning using our Spheros! Thank you Wintergreen for your generosity! This has provided so much more than a resource but a new meaning to lifelong learning!

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the costs of fulfilling the project, including purchasing and coordinating the delivery of classroom resources. This also supports the processing of thank-you cards and pictures from teachers and students to donors, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation to My Class Needs:  An optional donation to support My Class Needs calculated at 15% of your donation. This gift to the charity, which you can opt out of during the donation process, supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. Please note that project resources are not withheld if this amount is not raised.
