  • My Class Needs Garden Tower to Grow plants, food and herbs

    Launched October 14th, 2016 Project Deadline March 13th, 2017
Classroom Size 31 Students School Size 84 Students

    My Students

In our Outdoor Education course I would like to teach the students about sustainable living. I believe it is important to learn how to grow and take care of food, herbs and plants. With the food that we grow we will learn how to create meals and outdoor cooking with it. With the flowers we grow we will deliver to members of our community and work on a community beautification project.

How will this project impact them?

This is important because a lot of students do not realize where their food comes from. Some have never seen a garden or have no idea how their food grows. Packaged foods have become a large part of our society and I believe students should eat more non processed foods. I want children to learn self sustainable skills so that when they are adults they are able to grow their own food to live. This is a long term impact that will affect our community. To continue on after our tower garden inside I would like to see the students start a community garden outside our school. I also would like students learn how to cook and eat what they have planted.

    Project Report

    from Mrs. Stauffer

We have successfully built our garden tower and our now growing lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, swiss chard. The students successfully built the tower on their own incorporating their math and science knowledge. They are now eager and excited to watch every day as new plants develop and grow. We will be using the fruits of our labour on our outdoor education trip which we are taking in June. The students manage the tower by checking the PH of the water and making sure the light and water timers are working correctly.

I like the garden tower. It's really beneficial to us because we are learning not only how the plants grow but how to understand PH levels! - Indy (Gr.9)

I think that the tower garden benefits the students by giving them a sense of responsibility. And when the plants are done growing we can use them for our overnight trip to the river teaching students some survival skills which I think is a great thing to teach.- Jonah (Gr.8)

That way we can learn about all different kinds of plants that we might have never even heard about. And this way when we grow up and want to grow our own plants we at least know a little about gardening.- Nicole (Gr.9)

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
