  • My Class Needs reading materials to inspire environmental stewardship

    Launched October 3rd, 2016 Project Deadline January 17th, 2017

    My Students

My class is a highly mixed group of students. They come from a variety of demographic and cultural backgrounds. Our school has the great fortune to back out onto a protected park, so we have daily outdoor education for half an hour. These students are aware of the treasure they possess in their own backyard, but they do not yet know that the burden is on them, as our future, to protect and preserve it.

How will this project impact them?

With field journals, art supplies and print resources, I plan to build a program within which I hope to increase my students' sense of possession over their natural world. By inspiring interactions with our natural environment, documenting our natural encounters in our journals and linking our learning back to global issues, I hope to create future stewards of our natural world. Through these print resources and picture books I hope to provide inspiration, big questions, curiosity and passion about all things environmental and in the end ignite in all my students a desire to protect our environment and change to world.

    Project Report

    from Ms. Chalmers-Couture

Wow! The books we received from this grant are some of the favourite options in our Read to Someone/Make a Change bin. The students cannot say enough about how connected they feel to the natural world and their course of learning about environmental stewardship, and considering we've had snow on the ground for the last 2 months, being connected to nature can be difficult during a school day!

We've been using the picture books to help inspire forward movement in our global environmental learning as well as our planning for outdoor education throughout the tail end of the year. The students have suggested writing "Inspired by..." illustrated books based on some of our faves like Step Gently Out and What Does it Mean to be Present. Some of the students have been inspired by the readings to investigate further and base their Science Fair projects on what they have learned.

M.P. ~ age 10 "These books are so inspiring."
H.S. ~age 10 "I learned about how important it is to protect water and how lucky we are to have it."
E.I. ~age 10 "The book about water showed us how important water is and how much work people in other countries have to do to get it. It must be really hard."
S.G. ~age 11 "When we can't go outside, the books make me feel like I am still connected to outside."

My goal is always to heighten students' engagement with the outside world and the wonders of nature. Being able to bring that inspiration into the class on a daily basis, no matter the weather or the wellness of the students is priceless.
