  • My Class Needs a variety of tech tools to explore applied design and technology

    My Students

    This is a mixed grade 6 and 7 class that has been flourishing with the ability to invent and create during class time. One autistic boy finds hands on projects a stimulating activity which helps him socialize and integrate with other classmates. Many of the students do not have an opportunity at home to be "inventors", or lack the courage to try to hack or build. I have students who wish to explore and pursue programming and coding, and we should be able to provide this opportunity to them.

    How will this project impact them?

    As a maker and builder myself, I am hoping that my students will develop an understanding of the tools and technology that surrounds them on a daily basis. Empowering them to create and design, and feel the freedom and ability to do so would be exhilarating. Our class has an emphasis on creativity and learning how to bring ideas to life. Problem solving and tracking iterations of models and ideas is part of the process we follow. These projects bridge gaps between all curricular areas by using a variety of technology in the class for learning and understanding. Stimulating the creative side in students, requires an assortment of materials from which to choose. From take apart stations of old electronics, to computer design programs, I think a having variety of ways to explore curriculum is imperative. It is exciting to see this ideology is beginning to permeate our school.

    Project Report

    These new supplies have been used by our class in a variety of learning situations since they have arrived. We have been excited to use our new technology for learning but also with our younger buddy classes. We have been studying how to code and make decisions following cause and effect observations. Much of what students learn is reinforced with hands on manipulatives. and this is a perfect example of how students can learn design and coding challenges.

    I would like to thank the donors for providing these coding tools for our students. We strive to teach the students problem solving skills and this is just one more tool to help us with that. Different thinking helps attack the problem from many angles in a collaborative effort to find a solution. Very rewarding to watch.

    We are also grateful for our Silhouette Cameo. Definitely a creative tool but with the ability to do so much more. We have been working on models of buildings in 3D as a way of plotting out our neighborhood. We have also adorned the school and classroom with encouraging and inspirational sayings using vinyl, and are really only just getting started. We are learning more how to use these tools and planning for next year already.
    Your donations have opened up the create minds of many children at our school. Some students never experience out of the box thinking and this is one way to help make that happen.
