  • My Class Needs STEM materials and tools to tackle global light poverty

    Launched November 21st, 2016 Project Deadline April 30th, 2017
Classroom Size 30 Students School Size 1349 Students

    My Students

We are a grade 9 Science class in school that draws students from a variety of areas including inner city and First People's neighbourhoods. In our one to one environment, we use Connections-based Learning to connect, collaborate, and cultivate relationships across the globe. We are hoping to take on tackling light poverty in an impoverished developing community by co-designing LED lights with children to take the place of their kerosene lanterns.

How will this project impact them?

We will create a partnership with a community abroad and with the STEM materials and tools you provide, we will be able to learn from co-designing a light case, printing from 3D printers, and assembling custom made LED flashlights. Students will be engineering lights requiring a scientific knowledge of ohm’s law, circuit boards, and soldering iron and 3D printer use. This will not only meet a true global need but build empathy and understanding among those involved.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
