    My Students

I learn alongside 20 grade 3 students, in the community of Bradford West Gwillimbury. St. Angela Merici Catholic School, opened Fall 2015, & has welcomed new families from very diverse backgrounds. Most memorable, were the Syrian refugee families that joined us last winter. For many of our families, English isn't spoken at home. Your gift will greatly impact our school community, by providing hands-on learning opportunities, where exploration can happen beyond the barriers of a common language.

How will this project impact them?

This summer, I watched much of the Olympics, with my 10 year old, using the ‘VISA 360 VR" app. He was mesmerized by the experience. “Mommy! I feel like I am actually in Rio! I would have missed all this stuff, if I was just watching this on tv! I love choosing what I want to look at!” A spark went off in my head, about student engagement. Our school community is committed to providing our students with the very best opportunity to learn. Bringing a class set of Virtual Reality Viewers would enable students to choose their adventure in learning, & would improve upon their view of the world. They could look around at plants and soils, faraway lands, and experience different cultures. I think it is an amazing, simple way to integrate technology into our classrooms and advance student learning. Join me in bringing these opportunities to this unique community of students.

    Project Report

    from Mrs. Jeffries

I was thrilled to receive a class set of Google Cardboard viewers, a few weeks ago. Our community has welcomed new families from very diverse backgrounds, and language sets. The Google Cardboard viewers have had a great impact on our learners. Parents were very receptive to sending their phones, for the day, so that their children could participate in Google Expeditions. We have explored Pollination, a desert in Arizona and went underwater to learn about sharks. We are planning an Expedition to Italy, where our patron saint St. Angela Merici is from. This hands-on learning opportunity, has enabled my class to explore plants up close, and learn more about the importance of bees in our ecosystem. It has already pushed their learning experiences beyond the barriers of a common language. Students are eager to arrive every Monday, phones in hand to learn more, in this virtual reality. They are expressing ideas about choosing their adventure in learning, & already I am hearing comments that indicate a more open view of the world, as they look around at plants and soils, faraway lands, and experience different cultures. This has been an amazing few weeks, and has been a simple way to integrate technology into my classroom.

I have loved my 18 years experience as a Catholic Elementary teacher, in my hometown of Bradford West Gwillimbury. This community has changed so much, since I was a child. It used to be a small farming town, & has evolved into a bustling community of diverse cultures & languages. After ...
