    My Students

Our class is comprised of 24 students including First Nations, English Language learners, and special needs and many receive subsidized breakfasts and lunches. Queen Mary is an IB World School where the students are encouraged to inquire, research, discover their passions, and take action through project-based learning.

How will this project impact them?

I am currently doing my Masters inquiry with the goal of creating a classroom culture of reading. I have found that when students enter my room at the beginning of the year, they are not readers. When students get older, many only read for information and not for pleasure. I want to instill the love of reading that many of them once had when they were younger. To enable this to occur, students need access to quality books in their classroom. I have already spent quite a bit of my own money growing our classroom library which the students are excited and motivated to read, but research shows that you should have at least 20 books per student in your class. That would amount to 480 books, which is my goal. Reading allow students to learn about different cultures, different people and different stories. It teaches them to be empathetic and helps them be more successful academically.
