    My Students

Last year our school became official “beekeepers” with the installation of our very own beehive. This project came alive with the help and expertise of Alvéole, a local apiary service. The entire school population learned about the life cycle and importance of bees through a variety of visits and workshops. In class projects focused on research and creating reports, art work and storybooks. Our fall harvest allowed students to extract the honey themselves and taste pure, organic honey!

How will this project impact them?

When our school’s green team (The Earth Rangers) learned about the declining bee population a few years ago, they researched ways that our community could help. After locating a local beekeeping service, we began to fundraising to host our own hive on school property. Last spring the hive was installed in front of the reception area where the students and staff could watch the bees’ activity. Yearly renewal of our contract allows the hive to continue to grow and benefit local farms and gardens. Since the bees travel within a 5 km radius of the hive, their ability to pollinate local crops and gardens provides an environmental advantage to our community. Through workshops and eduction, the students and community have come to see the bees as friends and not a stinging menace, many myths have been debunked due to the hands-on education offered to the students and community.
