    My Students

I teach Grade 1 and I believe that my students learn best when I teach mathematics through rich, authentic tasks and use student work to guide my instruction. Then feedback I give to students is authentic as they learn to solve problems by persevering and justifying their thinking. Math Thinking tool bins play a vital role in the Learning Trajectory of Math. The placement of Thinking Tool bins in strategic locations around the classroom consolidates the inquiry approach to Math.

How will this project impact them?

By providing my students access to the Thinking Tool Bins my goal is to launch investigations wherein students inquire, explore, and co-construct mathematical solutions and strategies to their Math inquiries. The rationale for the proposal is related to the Grade 1 Theory of Action for Numeracy which is: If students are provided with a variety of hands on activities and games, then they will have a better understanding of Math concepts, as they move along the Math trajectory, and will also be able to communicate those concepts using appropriate Math Language. Thinking Tool Bins facilitate the blending of concrete tools with technology. The short term benefits is that whenever students explore they discover something new, a pattern, or ways to use the thinking tools. The long term benefit is that students acquire Math fluency through ongoing light bulb moments in their learning.
