    My Students

I have a class of 18 very energetic students who require lots of choice when it comes to learning spaces, especially during Math. We do most of our Math using hands-on and interactive lessons, and my students are beginning to discover the importance of finding a comfortable spot to work that suits their needs for each task. They move from collaborative groupings to independent quiet work at various times throughout the lesson and need a variety of seating choices to help them get on task quickly. Other times they just need to "change of scenery" to help them refocus. I have one student with special needs who has his own alternative seating choices, and his spots are quickly taken when not in use. I would love to be able to offer these same choices freely to others as well.

How will this project impact them?

Our school goal is to help students use critical thinking in Math. They must be given chances to take risks and show their learning beyond the paper-pencil/knowledge-based activities of the past. By giving students an opportunity to choose a place they feel most comfortable and ready to learn, we give students a better understanding of their personal learning styles. Alternative seating helps students understand that every learner is different, with different needs to reach their goal.
