  • My Class Needs Graphics Tablets to make and share animated family stories

    Launched October 31st, 2017 Project Deadline January 30th, 2018
Classroom Size 30 Students School Size 1400 Students

    My Students

This is a class of 30 students in grades 11 and 12 from diverse backgrounds and income levels who are exploring Media and Graphic Arts. Some are taking a course of this nature for the first time, others are looking in to further study and eventual employment in graphic arts and media related fields. Burnaby Central Secondary is a school of 1400 students and is located in a large and populous urban setting.

How will this project impact them?

In 1976, during the McKenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry, Gwich’in and Inuvialuet elders, born before 1900, told then Supreme Court Justice Thomas Berger stories about their childhood encounters with polar bears and wolves and their adventures living on the land. The stories were meant to entertain as well as to nurture the qualities of courage, perseverance and cooperation. Vancouver artist and animator, Markus Radtke has created animated short films of some of these stories as part of the ongoing project Thunder in Our Voices, curated by Drew Ann Wake. Markus will join my class of Media 11/12 and Graphics 11/12 students to take them through the process of creating animations of their own stories, collected from their parents or grandparents. The animated stories will then be shared in a video exchange with students in remote northern communities (who have made some videos of their own).

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
