    My Students

Carson Graham Secondary is an International Baccalaureate school. Our Grade 12 students who are taking DP math SL & HL are expected to complete their international final math exam with at least 2 papers; one is graphing calculator allowed and the other one is not graphing calculator allowed. Hence, using a graphing calculator to solve math problems is prescribed as one of the learning outcomes in DP math standards. Of course, the graphing calculator is also an important tool for our regular students who are taking Pre-Calculus 11 & 12, Foundations of Mathematics 11 & 12 which follow BC math curriculum. In BC math standards, students are expected to grasp the skills of how to graph functions, solve equations, calculate statistical problems, etc graphically and technologically. Therefore, the portable graphing calculator provides the best visualization and convenience in teaching and learning.

How will this project impact them?

Except our DP students who will be evaluated on the skills of using a graphing calculator in the international final exam, our Pre-Calculus 11&12 and Foundations 11&12 students were found to be more engaged in math learning with the help of a graphing calculator. With the assistance of a graphing calculator, they will not be afraid to tackle tedious statistical computations, such as finding the mean, variance, standard deviation, median, lower quartile, upper quartile, graphing scattered plot and boxplot for a large amount of data values. Students also can use the graphing calculator to help them visualize features of a variety of functions more easily than our traditional instruction and solve equations which can not be solved algebraically. Of course, the graphing calculator can help students improve their math understanding in a wide range of topics more than the ones illustrated above. The graphing calculator provides a wonderful platform allowing students to investigate, think and reflect on their math solutions, for instance, students can apply the graphing calculator to help them visualize the scattered plot, make a conjecture, test the conjecture, and evaluate the conjecture on the best regressed function for real-life problems. In my teaching experience, I find that students are more confident in the math assessments if they are allowed to use the graphing calculator.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the costs of fulfilling the project, including purchasing and coordinating the delivery of classroom resources. This also supports the processing of thank-you cards and pictures from teachers and students to donors, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation to My Class Needs:  An optional donation to support My Class Needs calculated at 15% of your donation. This gift to the charity, which you can opt out of during the donation process, supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. Please note that project resources are not withheld if this amount is not raised.
