  • My Class Needs a GPS enabled Drone to engage students in Remote Sensing

    My Students

QE is an inner-city school that is always looking at new ways to intrigue our students in science. Our department has made great efforts to engage our students with hands-on activities/projects and experiential PBL opportunities within the curriculum. Beyond the curriculum we have implemented a "Science Week" in which students explore their own curiosity of a science topic. We plan to leverage this energy by providing students with an opportunity they might not otherwise have. Grade 11/12.

How will this project impact them?

This project will demonstrate the significance of Earth Science to students using hands-on activities and will involve competition as a source of motivation. Students will use a GPS enabled drone for a field work remote sensing activity and mapping activities. Physics and biology students will use the drone to explore forces and population studies. Data collected has potential for cross-curriculum connections with geography and math students. Activities the drone will be used for will broaden the understanding of personal electronics and there potential as scientific data gathering tools. Competition in order to "win the contract" to fly the drone for the remote sensing activity will promote total engagement of students. The long-term benefits will be creating an excitement and current relevancy in the sciences for our students and stimulating future projects / uses of the drone.
