  • My Class Needs EMF radiation meters to measure radiation exposure

    Launched October 30th, 2017 Project Deadline January 30th, 2018
Classroom Size 20 Students School Size 1700 Students

    My Students

The Grades 10-12 students enrolled in my ICT courses come from diverse social-economic backgrounds but all have a common interest in information technology. Many desire a career in this field either through direct entry into the work force after graduation or after pursuing a post-secondary education. Some of their issues include attendance, anxiety, autism, hearing loss, and other learning disabilities. Most use smartphones and likely none have measured their exposure levels to EMF radiation.

How will this project impact them?

With the proliferation of wifi in everyday places coupled with the increased use of cellphones, students are continually exposed to EMF radiation. According to the World Health Organization, the EM fields produced by cellphones have been classified as a possible carcinogen. Students will use these meters to measure EMF radiation levels in various locations, with the goals of both bringing greater awareness of their degree of exposure and also fostering further inquiry into the long-term effects of this exposure. Short-term benefits include voluntarily reducing cellular usage and taking precautions to minimize EMF radiation exposure through the use of speakerphones or headsets when making necessary phone calls. Cancer prevention is the long-term benefit to students, staff, family and others in their community who understand the risks of EMF radiation exposure as a result of this project.
