  • My Class Needs STEM materials to Engage in self-directed learning

    My Students

Regardless of income, ethnicity or needs, we firmly believe that our students can break all barriers at Queen Mary. The students in my class, specifically, exemplify this. Within this group, there are ESL, special needs and low income students eager to explore everything in our new makerspace. They love to experiment with basic of materials and are able to create masterpieces. Using our class iPad, students love to document their learning and record themselves explaining their inventions.

How will this project impact them?

With an insurgence of STEM materials, students can take their current love of makerspace and apply it to more sophisticated materials. We are hoping to venture into robotics, coding and construction to challenge students' thinking. Being an inner city school, our students do not have the same advantages as others across the city. With these new materials, students will gain foundational skills that they can carry with them into later years. Through STEM learning opportunities, students acquire both academic and life skills; therefore, by expanding our makerspace to include such materials, students will practice problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills, not just improving functional numeracy and literacy skills. In the future, our dream is to have some of these students realize their full potential through STEM teacher, and venture into some of these exciting new career paths!
