  • My Class Needs a 3D printer to enhance their hands-on STEM learning

    My Students

    Our school has two Design & Drafting (Engineering) 11 classes and one D & D (Engineering) 10 class, with 90 students enrolling from Grades 9 through 12. The students come from a wide spectrum, including ADHD, Autism, and Gifted. Many of the students have mastered Google Sketchup and Cura, and now they are ready for the next step: 3D Printing. They love hands-on learning, and they want to build the things that they draw in CAD! Our students need financial assistance in purchasing a 3D printer.

    How will this project impact them?

    A dozen very enthusiastic Engineering students (4 per class) have said they want to take on the role of training fellow classmates to use the 3D printer, so that every one of the 90 students uses the printer by Christmas. The same dozen students researched which 3D printer to buy, and asked me to submit this project to MyClassNeeds. The 3D printer will enable the students to complete the Design Process loop. For example, my students this year have analyzed the housing crisis in Vancouver, designed "tiny homes" (modular homes), "drafted" the homes in Google Sketchup, learned CURA. The missing piece in the Design Process is "building the prototype". Some students will build it with toothpicks or cardboard, but most students want to enter the 21st century, and build it with a 3D printer. My students will help the entire student body at lunch and after school with their 3D printing needs.
