  • My Class Needs Flexible seating to enhance learning and ability to focus

    Launched October 20th, 2017 Project Deadline January 30th, 2018

    My Students

We are a classroom family of 20. With 6 girls and 14 boys. One student has autism and is non-verbal. 4 students are learning English as their second language. 3 students have weekly sessions with a Speech Pathologist. We have two students currently on medication for ADHD. As well as 9 students with adaptation for their success in the classroom. These adaptations include finding alternative seating to help them focus. Unfortunately this is usually not feasible, due to lack of resources.

How will this project impact them?

Many of my students would benefit from alternative seating. However due to lack of resources available to our school I am unable to provide this. I have tried to utilize as many of my own resources possible. I have brought in an exercise ball from home for one specific student. After one day of use their focus has shifted dramatically for the better. They are able to complete their work, read, play and participate in all classroom activities while on their ball. They are able to release energy bouncing while still continuing to learn. previous to this, this student would constantly fidget trying to find some way to keep focused and release their energy. I have many more students in my class that would benefit from an alternative seat rather than their chairs. My hope is to create an equitable classroom where everyone can thrive.
