  • My Class Needs manipulatives and hand-on lab tools to enhance learning of currents and earth

    Launched October 22nd, 2017 Project Deadline January 30th, 2018
Classroom Size 24 Students School Size 1326 Students

    My Students

I have three Earth Science 11 classes and 1 Geology 12 class that will benefit. While grade 11 is a required science, and gr. 12 is an elective, there is high interest in taking these courses. The 2 most significant problems that I face when covering the topics for both courses is the Earth is too large and is therefore difficult to model properly in a classroom setting. The second problem is finding meaningful manipulatives and labs to perform that will connect students to the concepts.

How will this project impact them?

My goal for this project is for students to have gain a greater global understanding of various topics using hands on and visual manipulatives. The Convection Current Kit will allow students to visually see the currents that exist in the atmosphere and oceans. Students will be able to better grasp ocean density currents relating to temperature and salinity, mixing warm and cold water, or salt water and fresh water (which can be dyed for visibility) and to see convection currents and the development of wind. The Globe Kit will allow students to use writable/erasable clear spheres to explore measurement of the Earth, seismology, weather, ocean currents, time zones and astronomy. The benefits will be enhancing the individuals learning with the topic being studied but will fill a larger piece of understanding of how it relates to the interconnectedness of the different spheres of earth.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
