    My Students

I am teaching a Grade 7/8 class this year and in a different school. Banting Middle's student population is very is very similar to that of my previous school; it is located in a low to middle socio-economic neighbourhood. A few of my students are special needs and need extra support to be more successful in the classroom. There are also EAL (English as an additional language) students in the class. I want to encourage the use of technology in the classroom; a few students will have some form of technology whether it be a smartphone, a tablet, or a laptop, but many do not. Last year, my two special-needs students and two other students who struggled with reading at grade level, were able to use the iPads to read texts and to record their thoughts. One of my EAL students who couldn't speak English at all was able to use Google Translate on the iPad to communicate with me and the other students. Overall, the students are more engaged and focused when I use technology to present my lessons. All of them show great interest in technology and most of them are very comfortable using smart phones, tablets and computers. They prefer using them to take notes, to conduct research, to do calculations in math. At our school, while we encourage the use of technology, we don’t always have access to a lot of this technology.

How will this project impact them?

In the new BC curriculum, there are manysuggestions on how to teach/use technology to the classroom. Coding and programming are two important skills that the students in today's world will need to learn as technology becomes more and more relevant to their lives. Knowing and even being aware of these skills give the students more options for their future which is why I would like to apply for some of this technology for my classroom. I have to say that I am not very knowledgeable in this area. I was hoping to just give the stuff to my students, and they will learn how to use it and show me how to. At times when I was able to get some computer lab time for coding, I saw my students become very involved in their learning. There were many discussions and conversations between them on how to make their object move forwards, backwards, sideways, etc. inside a "little box" on the screen. I also saw a lot of cooperative learning as they helped each other get to the next level. At my school we got some used Spheros which I was able to sign out for my class. I saw my not-very-verbal special needs kid go from talking to me about what he was doing with his Sphero to talking about other stuff happening in his life. Other kids were excited when they got their Sphero to do "tricks". They quickly realized that they can have and learn at the same time. As well as using technology to learn coding, I would like to apply for other materials to help my special needs students be more included in the classroom. While the other students are very inclusive and accepting of them, at times, they aren't able to do a lot of the work so I am hoping with the levelled books as a start, they can be more independent readers.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
