    My Students

My kiddos are in grade 5 and 6. I have an amazing group of inquisitive kids. They love to build and explore and ask questions. I have created STEM bins for our soft start mornings and they always take full advantage of this opportunity to build and explore. The challenge we face right now is that we don't have a tremendous amount of flexible seating. I am excited to get started with inquiry and the vision I have for my class is that my kiddos can use every space imaginable in our room to explore, build and learn.

How will this project impact them?

5 years ago I decided to trade my traditional student desks for tables. I scrounged all over my school for tables-I was even using plastic folding tables at one point-I truly believed that best practice was to have students working at tables rather then individual desks. Tables foster community, cooperation, sharing and self regulation. It was one of the best decision I have ever made for my classroom (despite all the questioning I received at the time). Over the years I have tried to create more flexible seating in and around my room using carpets and furniture to create learning nooks and different types of lighting to support student's self reg. The vision I have for my classroom is one of a learning commons where students can explore, and inquire in various spaces around the room. This type of space is warm and inviting and creates an encouraging atmosphere for students to learn.
