    My Students

    I have a group of about eight students, ranging from grade 10 to 12 who are interested in learning to build and program robots through an after school club. These students are in my science and physics classes, and some of them intend to pursue careers in engineering and computer science. In the medium term, if demand is sufficient, I intend to create a full course around robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, programming, and design.

    How will this project impact them?

    Our main project is the building of robotic self-driving cars. We have already built (partly with a 3D printer) and tested our first of three self-driving cars. Students will actually teach the car to drive itself by driving several laps around a track. The car uses neural networks to analyze video images in order to drive. Neural networks are an important idea used today in speech recognition, translation, and even in actual self driving cars. Other projects include building and programming Arduino controlled quadrupeds and Raspi-3 controlled robot tanks. I intend to teach the students ideas about robot localization, which means for us having the robot find its position on a map of a room using ultrasonic sensors. Students will also learn how to use 3D CAD software (OnShape). The ideas students learn in this club will likely be highly applicable in their future careers.
