  • My Class Needs STEM materials to use hands on learning to inspire writing

    Launched October 12th, 2017 Project Deadline January 10th, 2018
Classroom Size 26 Students School Size 279 Students

    My Students

Yarrow Community School is located in the Fraser Valley, halfway between Abbotsford and Chilliwack. I teach a group of enthusiastic and diverse learners that enjoy using their creative skills to build intricate contraptions in our classroom Makerspace. My students enjoy working collaboratively, approach challenges with a Growth Mindset, and welcome the opportunity to explore new and exciting building materials.

How will this project impact them?

Through the use of these resources, students will learn about STEM, use the design process to develop their own creative inventions, and then use those inventions to spark their creative writing endeavors. Even the most struggling writers can be inspired to write a diary entry from the perspective of their handmade cardboard box robot, write a list of the steps they took to construct a building block bridge, or draw and label a detailed diagram of their latest invention. Structuring their learning this way provides a clear purpose for the STEM/Makerspace projects they create, as students design, create, reflect, and write about their creative processes. Children are naturally curious and creative - I hope to use these resources to tap into that creativity, and use it as a jumping off point to provide a variety of creative writing opportunities.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
