  • My Class Needs Camera Lenses to Conduct Photo Analysis in Science

    Launched October 17th, 2017 Project Deadline January 30th, 2018
Classroom Size 90 Students School Size 1400 Students

    My Students

I teach Science and Biology to a variety of students between grade 8-12. They come to class with vastly differing background knowledge, experiences and interests. While students are frequently using technology, the vast majority stems from the consumer side of things. I intend to help develop students' skills on the producer side, where they will encounter challenges as they use technology to generate and collect data.

How will this project impact them?

Students will use the lenses to improve science experiment observations. One example, a microbial investigation, has students growing bacteria. Traditionally students have defaulted to taking unaided qualitative observations along with rudimentary sketches of the growing colonies. Despite the rise of cell phone cameras, students find the quality to be sub par for data purposes. With the new lenses each student will have highly detailed photographs of their collected samples. The improved observations can be used to help identify the types of bacteria collected. Consistency in the data collection will now enable cross comparison between various groups for more meaningful and broadband interpretation and discussion. Qualitative observations are also now possible, with students using photo editing software to overlay grid lines and calculating the area coverage and rate of growth.
