Family Involvement in Math

Funded! This project reached its funding goal on Dec. 21, 2017, 8:53 a.m.

Still needed of $627.63 goal
  • My Class Needs math, art & coding materials to expose families to our math curriculum.

    Launched October 12th, 2017 Project Deadline January 14th, 2018
Classroom Size 62 Students School Size 300 Students

    My Students

The students involved in this project are between 12 and 14 years old. At least one-third of our students are new to Canada and are continuing to work on mastering English. Many of our students are from families living below the poverty line. Some of our families have had negative relationships with the education system and other government agencies and are likely to avoid schools because of this. Our students are eager to learn and are continuing to develop an eagerness to understand math.

How will this project impact them?

With this grant money we will be setting up at least three parent-involvement events where Gr. 7 & 8 students will be asked to bring in their families to join them in math or coding-based activities. We will provide food, games and instruction on those dates. The topics to be covered will include math games, connecting math & art, how coding is included in the classroom as well as a chance for some math problem-solving. We have many goals with this project. Our first is to encourage "growth mindset" among our parents and students and make math accessible to all so that they are less likely to proclaim "I'm just not good at math" . We also want to improve parental involvment in our school to support relationships between students and their families and make school a comfortable place to me. We know that all of these things will benefit student learning and risk-taking.
