  • My Class Needs modern physics equipment and probeware to investigate physical science topics

    Launched October 12th, 2017 Project Deadline January 30th, 2018
Classroom Size 200 Students School Size 1408 Students

    My Students

Having taught all grades in secondary school, for this year the project will target students in grades 8, 10, 11 and 12. Kitsilano has one of the widest student demographics in BC with significant numbers from the Americas, Asia, and Europe. My students trend towards critical thinking and strive for excellence, while not being afraid to question the status quo. They have a thirst to be challenged in authentic ways. My students see science labs as being fun and interesting, as well as a crucial part of learning.

How will this project impact them?

The overall goal of this project is to help create a technology-rich educational environment to promote engagement of youth in STEM, leading to higher levels of participation in science and engineering programs at university. The short term impact of the requested resources will be a large increase in the number of experiments and hands-on activities we can do in physics classes, resulting in greater conceptual understanding of the physical sciences. The probeware will also help support the curricular competencies outlined in the new BC curriculum. The long-term benefit for our students is they will be better prepared for post-secondary education, by practicing process skills such as setting up experiments, using critical thinking to analyze results, and having hands-on experience with modern data acquisition equipment.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.

I've been teaching math and science for 6 years. Prior to teaching I had a successful career as a mechanical engineer where I spent significant time collaborating and working with people across the glob. This work laid a great foundation for me as a STEM educator working with diverse ...
