    My Students

When you walk into Starbucks, you see people working, they may be sitting in a cozy chair, at a table of 4, or maybe by the fireplace. The fact is, we all work best in different seating arrangements. I hope to create a positive, non-institutional learning environment that feels like a second home. I want my grade 9 students to be excited about being in my classroom, and feel comfortable while they are there, teens learn best in different physical ways, such as standing, sitting, lying, or moving.

How will this project impact them?

In my classroom, I aim to make my students feel like our classroom is their home away from home. Typically a classroom can feel institutional, however, with the flexible seating classroom, I aim to take into account that all students learn best in different ways. One of these ways is by being able to choose their seating option, which could be a traditional desk, a comfy chair, or moving around on a wiggle stool or stability ball. By providing students with a choice in their seating option, I am giving them ownership over their own learning, they are deciding where they learn best, and feel the most comfortable. This puts responsibility for classroom behavior on the student's shoulders. Students will also realize that ultimately I care about their comfort, and that I have their best interests at heart, both in comfort level and in their mastery of the math outcomes.
