    My Students

    My Science 10 class is made up of a mixed ability group of students. About 25 percent of the class are either English Language Learners (ELL) or adapted. My preferred approach to teaching and supporting students in my science class is to make the class work as "hands-on" as possible. This means that my students will spend part of every science class in the lab doing some hands-on learning activity. With a 3D printer I will be able to print out lab manipulative for our DNA/genetics unit.

    How will this project impact them?

    My Science 10 students will have lab access to the 3D printer to print out parts of the DNA molecule. Genetics and the study of DNA is one of the more abstract units in Science 10. The 3D printer can be used to print out copies of the parts of DNA to show students how DNA is built. The 3D printer will be used to print out DNA hydrogen bonds and the phosphate sugar backbone. In addition to the base pairs my Science class will be able to print out 3 dimensional copies of molecules. Students will be able to visualize how mutations can cause the DNA to be changed by insertions, deletions, duplications and reversals. DNA manipulatives will help my students to better visualize the process of DNA replication. My students will develop a deeper and more profound understanding of the importance of using models in science to show how biochemical reactions occur.
