  • My Class Needs nine cooking elements to develop skills, knowledge & love of food

Let's Get Cooking ! Classroom Project at South Meridian Elementary
    Launched October 14th, 2017 Project Deadline March 13th, 2018
Classroom Size 25 Students School Size 350 Students

    My Students

The class is composed of seven Grade 6 students and eighteen Grade 7 students. Their backgrounds includes single family dwellings, condominiums, basement suites and trailer parks. They are interested in sports, outdoor activities and dance. Many students in the class do not have experience or knowledge of food preparation or cooking or where food comes from or how food is tied to tradition and culture. Like all kids they enjoy learning by doing and experimenting. This project fits this desire.

How will this project impact them?

The requested resource will give the students an opportunity to prepare food and learn about culture, and history and science and math in a way that simply would be very unlikely for them to do on their own. I hope students will not only connect food to the various cross-curricular learning outcomes we will cover in Social Studies, Science, Math and Health but also develop some real skills that they can use and develop after they leave school (ie. food preparation and cooking). I believe that by having the opportunity to learn to prepare food and cook, students level of self-confidence will rise dramatically. I would like students to be able to share their cooking abilities, knowledge and meals with others in the school and the community to help further build a positive relationship with those around them.
