  • My Class Needs a 3D Printer to design and create.

    My Students

I have a diverse group of grade 6s and 7s. This year my students seem like they will struggle in the academics, particularly in Math. But they do love technology, and the idea of having a 3D printer in the classroom really excites them because they will be able to learn how to model and design objects (either as art or as a useful tool or item) and then to have them printed out before their eyes. We had a printer at my school last year, and my students loved it! They were motivated to learn.

How will this project impact them?

In my experience, having something like a 3D printer has real potential to engage and motivate learners. I don't need to keep students on task, because they are naturally motivated to create something that they will be able to hold in their hands once printed. In my class last year, I even had students designing 3D models at home for fun. Furthermore, doing 3D designing and printing in the classroom connects to learning outcomes in Math (X, Y, Z axis positioning, and proportions), Art (creating sculpts), Applied Design, and in general taps into a field of design and technology that is very relevant to students (movies, video games, action figures) and the general public (inventions, medicine). Lastly, becoming familiar with 3D printing means that students can start to be "handy" around the home as they will be able to create objects or parts to repair items or make new inventions.
