  • My Class Needs Workshops to Continue learning about bees

Keep the Honey Flowing! Classroom Project at Twin Oaks Elementary School
    Launched September 25th, 2017 Project Deadline February 22nd, 2018
Classroom Size 70 Students School Size 530 Students

    My Students

In June of 2017 we became official "beekeepers"! With gracious funding though My Class Needs, we teamed up with Alveole, a local urban beekeeping organization that aims to help save bees. The students were nervous , yet excited about the prospect of bees in our schoolyard. They were engaged in a number of workshops and teacher-led activities in the classroom. The hands-on experience broke down may misconceptions and enhanced learning for students at all levels and abilities in our school.

How will this project impact them?

The learning and respect that the students gained from having a hive on our school property, the life cycle of bees and being able to observe the process of honey-making has brought them closer to nature. In late October the hive will be "winterized" and our colony will hibernate. In late Spring, the hive will be reopened and students will once again be encouraged to observe the daily functioning inside the hive. This involves a series of workshops and monthly visits by the beekeepers while engaging the students and offering a hands-on approach to learning. Students will use their knowledge and understanding to create projects and share their understanding with their family and the community at large. Student work will be shared through social media and traditional means.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
