    My Students

    This project application is to support math learning in the Geometry and Spatial Sense strand in our primary division, including kindergarten through Grade Three. This is over 100 children. Smithson Public School is a small school of less than 230 students, including three congregated classrooms. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and live in a low-middle class neighbourhood. A focus of our school is Math as EQAO test scores decreased for a couple of years. We are working towards increasing these scores and building a stronger problem solving capability. Our students respond well to kinestetic learning and love to build.

    How will this project impact them?

    This application is for geometric building materials. Students in primary grades need to engage in exploration of both two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids and the relationship between the two. Building a strong foundation in Geometry will help them be successful in later years. The manipulatives requested in this application will allow students to experiment with building a variety of three-dimensional solids and combining them to make other structures. They will be able to see the relationship between the dimensions and how they work together. The materials requested are larger than most manipulatives students use when building geometric structures. It is hoped that the larger materials will be easier for younger students to manipulate, especially when working in small groups. The snap together component of these sets provides more stability for structures build. Students will be learning about the 2d shapes that make up 3D solids and how they interact with each other (e.g., for stability). As students continue to build and experiment with Geometry manipulatives they will not only learn the properties of shapes and solids in a hands on approach but will be able to extend their learning to other subjects, such as Science. An intended outcome is that student achievement in this Math strand will increase, as evidenced in their grades and test scores.
