  • My Class Needs Technology - EV3 Mind Storm Robotics Kits to develop digital literacy/coding skills.

Coding for Cool Kids - Robotics Classroom Project at James Ardiel Elementary
    Launched September 17th, 2017 Project Deadline March 23rd, 2018
Classroom Size 60 Students School Size 381 Students

    My Students

Approximately 60 grade six inner-city students will benefit from this programming and robotics program. My students thrive by engaging in inquiry based learning; this program will help to further ignite the curiosity bug. My student’s intuition skills are high and will be utilized with this program as they design and create working projects with components that will be foreign to them. Our students do not see problems as failures but a mere obstacle that they can overcome. While working as teams they will collaborate and find solutions to these math/science/engineering problems. Recently, we received the Indigo Reading grant for our inner-city school for which we were incredibly grateful. However, students believe it is equally important to develop digital literacy skills so that they can have a strong foothold in the twenty first century.

How will this project impact them?

Inquiry and problem-based learning will be launched by implementing a robotics program. This passion for creation and challenge is what will engage our students and provide them with opportunities that they would not otherwise get. Open-ended challenges with current technology would be the ultimate for them. The robotics program will address: Engagement Socialization Collaboration Problem solving This project is unique in the northern end of surrey. Students lack many opportunities in this inner-city area and thus this experience would be unique and transformative in their learning. The technology kits will open windows for new career opportunities and allow students to see there are alternative career paths. The entire school would benefit from these robotics kits. I am a trained robotics teacher who is willing to collaborate or team teach with multiple grades. Differentiated learning according to abilities will definitely be considered because of our varying ability population. With the new curriculum currently being phased in, technology has emerged as its own subject area (Applied Design and Technology at the elementary school level). The EV3 Robotics kits will stimulate critical thinking and allow students to have fun learning while meeting ministry requirements. Their global connection will be to try to overcome land mines by designing robots that would be able to detonate large surface areas with limited cost. The epic thing for our students will be to create futuristic space planet rovers that could possibly provide some inspiration for NASA engineers. These will be presented via Skype.
