Greenhouse supplies to teach food security to at risk youth Classroom Project at Norman Johnston Secondary Alternate School
    Launched August 24th, 2017 Project Deadline January 21st, 2018
Classroom Size 30 Students School Size 250 Students

    My Students

Our students are at risk individuals, 16-21 years of age who struggled in 'regular schools' for different reasons including: low socioeconomic status, learning disabilities, unstable home situations, family violence, addictions issues, and mental health issues. Our students struggle to afford healthy foods at home and are interested in increasing food security for themselves and their communities through sustainable gardening.

How will this project impact them?

Our students are an extraordinarily resilient group who face challenges that many of us may never begin to encounter. All of our students express that our school provides them with a unique opportunity to get back on track to obtain their secondary school diplomas. We currently have some garden beds built beside the school and these gardens have been a catalyst in helping our students who struggle with different challenges such as mental health to connect with each other and their learning while developing a sense of ownership and belonging that they may not have ever felt. With greenhouse supplies, we hope to make healthy eating education come alive at our school. With a greenhouse set up for our students to use we will be able to extend our growing season to allow even more time each year for our students to learn about horticulture, food security, nutrition and sustainability.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
