  • My Class Needs STEM learning and Makedo Kits to engage students cross curricular

    Launched July 28th, 2017 Project Deadline January 10th, 2018
Classroom Size 24 Students School Size 0 Students

    My Students

The students that will benefit will be the grade three cohort at Richard Bulpitt Elementary. This year there are 5 full grade 3 classes(over 100 students). With a small catchment area most of the school's population reside in high density homes. These children no longer have the huge backyards to play and experiment in! Students vary from English language learners, diverse backgrounds, autism, intense behaviours, & mild learning disabilities. Students have shown a keen interest in hands on learning. Makers spaces and STEM projects have been successful in that they are easily differentiated, engaging and inclusive of all learning styles.

How will this project impact them?

The grade three cohort at Richard Bulpitt Elementary will benefit through the funding of this project. The funding will allow us to access makedo kits and STEM learning projects. We will be exploring grade level content from areas of learning in cross curricular activities to develop foundational mindset and skills in design thinking and making. We hope to have students work collaboratively to ideate, make and share projects that they will build out of cardboard. We will focus students on reflecting about their experiences, collaborating with peers, critically thinking about design, incorporating feedback from peers and finally reflecting on the ability to work collaboratively, independently and follow the design process. This will also connect to our wider literacy curriculum as we design bridges based on the Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the homes of the Three Little Pigs! We will connect building three dimensional models of shapes for hands on learning in math. We hope to build collaborative functional works of art that we can use for our drama presentations. Richard Bulpitt's core vision statement is to build community, collaboration, communication and cooperation. I feel hands on learning naturally lends itself to building upon these four! Learning becomes more authentic for students, engaging and leads to deeper critical thinking! Learning becomes intrinsically fun! Short term benefits will be to hook students into learning, while long term benefits will be significant in student documentation through self reflection, building stamina to cycle through the design process and intrinsic motivation to participate independently and collaboratively within the classroom. I feel that developing and building community, collaboration, communication and cooperation positively impacts student achievement and helps to develop a positive sense of self. When we feel included, safe, happy, important and cared for we are more likely to take learning risks we would otherwise not have taken!

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
