  • My Class Needs A Traditional Teachings Carpet to Further Integrate First Nations Principles

    My Students

In September I have a highly diverse grade 3/4 class. My students include English Language learners, children with a variety of special learning challenges, as well as advanced learners - in most ways a pretty typical public school spectrum of students. My 2017/18 students are already attuned to some of the First Principles of Learning through the activities and field trips they experienced this last school year: they are ready to expand and deepen their knowledge and their connections.

How will this project impact them?

All of the students in my room will use this special carpet many times a day. As a Montessori class, the carpet is the centre of our learning: we sit at the carpet for lessons, class meetings and discussions, and the students often choose to work at the carpet during Work Time. To have a physical connection to First Principles of Learning - through this carpet - will increase the students' understanding of the wisdom to be learned from our First Nations. Students from other classes (there are 5 Montessori classes at my little school) often visit my classroom, as we do many activities as a community. This special carpet will also serve as a touchstone for the visiting children.
