  • My Class Needs a Traditional Teachings Rug to improve aboriginal understanding.

    My Students

Coyote Creek Elementary is an ethnically diverse middle class school located in Surrey, BC with a need for an understanding of aboriginal peoples and their contributions to Canada and Canadian culture. Teachers and students are eager to learn in order to help them better understand Canadian history and who we are as a nation of multicultural citizens. This fifth grade class would be a great place to initiate this learning, and to share it with the wider school community.

How will this project impact them?

It is my goal to use the traditional teachings rug, in addition to the circle of courage, to build a class community based on a number of First Nations principles. The 7 basic virtues (courage, wisdom, truth, honesty, love, respect and humility) in addition to the circle of courage goals (belonging, independence, mastery and generosity) would create a strong foundation upon which all other learning could build. This strongly supports our new curriculum in the development of the whole child. As these teachings, in this context, are new to this school, it is my intent to share this with other classrooms and to have students share their learning throughout the school. Additionally, collaborative time with other teachers would allow this to be shared across all grades.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
