  • My Class Needs building/STEM manipulatives to improve fine motor skills in a fun way.

    My Students

All of my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are in a grade 1-3 Intensive Support Program within a regular community public school. My students are highly intelligent but have difficulty with emotion regulation, social skills, and fine motor skills. Most of my students come from single parent families and have limited financial resources. We strive to make our classroom a one-stop-shop for all their therapeutic, social, emotional, and academic needs.

How will this project impact them?

Many students with Autism have difficulties with fine motor skills (doing up buttons, zippers, and especially writing). These challenges are due to weak muscles in their hands, poor coordination, and difficulties with processing sensory information. Learning to write can be especially difficult. My students often have big reactions when asked to do a paper and pencil task. With your help, I hope to improve my students' finger strength and coordination through activities that they enjoy -specifically, Building/STEM activities. Despite their difficulties with motor skills, my students love building, designing, and creating structures (we often use recycled materials). I would like to capitalize on these strengths and interest and use building/STEM manipulatives to target their fine motor needs. Physical therapy can be frustrating. With your help, we can make it more fun AND more effective.
