  • My Class Needs geometric math materials to explore shapes, space and spatial reasoning

    My Students

    In the inner city Kindergarten classroom where I work, there are 20 inquisitive and enthusiastic students with a wide range of abilities, thoughts and experiences. The children love to use materials to visualize and build structures. Math is intricately imbedded in their natural and manmade environments. Participation is ‘hands on math’ is necessary to help students develop foundational mathematical concepts, flexible thinking, mathematical ingenuity, spatial reasoning, and an ability to learn with their whole being. Wherever possible, I attempt to use hands on math to facilitate children’s natural tendency to physically explore concepts and ideas. However, students often have to share a small number of manipulatives and their efforts to explore their ideas are often constrained by the lack of materials . As learning resources budgets are limited so too is the school’s ability to purchase materials . A grant of new math manipulatives would help us to build a more developmentally appropriate and engaging early mathematics program that addresses aspects of geometry and spatial reasoning as well as numbers and operations.

    How will this project impact them?

    The project materials would support the daily exploration of shapes and space and spatial relationships for the entire class as well as a permanent math station in the room. Having a class set of building materials or manipulatives would mean that all the children could work on the same project or lesson at the same time. Currently, supplies are limited and there are often only enough supplies for a group of four students. So when we are working with 3D shapes to engineer a structure that is tall and strong for example, we are constrained by the type and amount of materials we have on hand. Young children are concrete learners and love to explore new concepts using materials that allow them to choose, theorize, experiment and try again. Doing more hands-on math with the whole class would engender passion, curiosity, a love for math and community. In addition, kinaesthetically working with mathematical ideas would help students to develop the reciprocal ability to mentally visualize and physically manifest ideas.
