  • My Class Needs sensory tools to develop their social and communication skills

    Launched May 19th, 2017 Project Deadline January 10th, 2018
Classroom Size 14 Students School Size 430 Students

    My Students

The students who would benefit are my students in Kindergarten to Grade 3, who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and physical disabilities. They are also learners who learn best visually and through hands-on activities. Three of these students are non-verbal and are showing interest in their surroundings through their eyes and their hands. The challenges they all face with this project is their communication and social skills. This project will give them all the opportunities to not only develop their communication and social skills, but also build their confidence and decrease anxieties they might have in different social situations. With their different sensory needs ranging from tactile, to physical to light to food, if we can give them tools or strategies they will still be part of the classroom community.

How will this project impact them?

Students will use the resources for their their project-based learning in Science and Literacy, but also other times, when needed in the classrroom to help support building the bridge in their interactions with peers and adults in their classes. Plus they would use these resources for social skills group times with their peers. Short-term and Long term we would see students benefiting by: academically learning through hands-on activities, their confidence would be developing, building more awareness of their surrounding and peers, identifying what their bodies might need (ie. using the resources to take breaks outside using some of these materials) to developing their communication with others around them. Furthermore, long-term these students would be initiating interactions with peers and adults in their classrooms and in the school community.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds.
