  • My Class Needs yoga mats and equipment to build their yoga and meditation skills

    Launched April 26th, 2017 Project Deadline August 31st, 2017
Classroom Size 15 Students School Size 300 Students

    My Students

This program will be presented to students at our school who are between 9 and 14 years old. These students may be first generation Canadians or students that come from working class families or families from generational poverty. Many come from homes where mental health issues are a concern. Our students have been working on skills related to mindfulness and self regulation. Yoga is another tool for these children to use to assist with calming their minds so that they are prepared for learning.

How will this project impact them?

Students will use yoga equipment and meditation music to practise meditation and yoga poses as part of a weekly yoga club. My hope would be that my students would continue to use these poses and other strategies to assist them when they were in need of tools to help calm down or gain physical agility. If students are returning to the club, eager to try new moves and using these tools outside of our meetings, then I will read these as signs that the club has been successful. This would assist as part of our school-wide initiative to promoting self-regulation, mindfulness and resilience amongst our students.

    Project Report

    from Ms. Piche

The students have been using the yoga materials in a variety of ways. The Grade 7 & 8 students in my class have been using them during mindfulness. This is a period of 5 – 10 minutes after recess or lunch where the students have time to meditate, stretch, draw, or relax so that their minds and bodies are ready for learning.
The Grade 3 & 4 students have been using the materials as part of a yoga club that meets twice a week. The students have a chance to playfully learn different yoga poses and then end in a “savasana” (quiet mindfulness) for the last 3 minutes. This is the first time we have had a yoga club at our school and the novelty is exciting for them.

This has benefitted the students because they are being given time to transition. They are able to calm down and move on from the issues and concerns from their break. They are quiet and ready to listen and understand much faster when they have time for mindfulness first.
The younger students love the chance to be part of a club at school. They enjoy the social aspect and the chance to learn something new. The club gives them the chance to learn strategies that can help them to control stress and make sure they are ready for learning.

When students were asked about how yoga and mindfulness helps them, they answered:

“It helps by calming me down after basketball or playing outside”
“It makes me calm. I can focus more”
“The mindfulness is helping me calm down so I don't get stressed”
    “It relaxes my body”
“I can focus on the here and now”
“It helps me transition and makes me creative”
“When I have a bad day, mindfulness makes me calm down”
