    My Students

    I am a technology facilitator in our district and work with K-12 students from diverse background and diverse needs. The elementary students are very dynamic and need hands-on experiences! They will benefit most by engaging in hands-on technologies through creativity and making, in ways they may have never seen before.

    How will this project impact them?

    Cubelets are a modular robotic system which allow students to explore hands-on different aspects of robotic design, construction and programmation. Cubelets are simple to use, and are extremely engaging, especially since they are compatible with Lego. Students in my classes will use Cubelets to explore systems, logic and computational thinking in a tangible and fun way. Students will also start coding their robots using the iPads and the Bluetooth block. These Cubelets will extend student’s creativity, critical thinking and innovation which are core skills needed in our ADST (Applied Design Skills and Technology) focused classrooms.

    The cubelets are being tested in the library during our Maker club as a free and semi-guided exploration, among other technologies and robotic devices. After students got familiar with the function of the different cubes through building the sample bots, we did some problem solving activities. Cubelets were mostly used as a core competency activity to promote the collaboration and communication between students.
    Students loved the easiness and versatility of Cubelets as they quickly figured out how to clip the cubes together to build robots, trains etc...It was a great opportunity for a few students and I discovered the potential of using Cubelets. However I would need many more Cubelets kits to really be able to use them in a classroom environment.

    One aspect all of my students shared was their passion for learning new technologies! This year, my goal is to engage and ignite a life long learning passion, using 21st century technologies with my students in an inclusive classroom environment.

    Students feedback included "It's so cool, I can control a train approaching my hand", "I wonder what I can lego arm I can attach to the Cubelets" and "I love attaching Cubelets randomly to see what will happen and then improving my robot".
