  • My Class Needs hands on science activities to engage students in abstract science topics

    Launched April 18th, 2017 Project Deadline August 31st, 2017
Classroom Size 28 Students School Size 172 Students

    My Students

This project would benefit my class as well as many of other other intermediate classes in our school. We have such a variety of different learning levels, language levels, and abilities in our grade 4-7 students that it's difficult to tailor a lesson to fit every student adequately. Having easily adaptable resources that would appeal to many different levels and learning styles would make teaching science much easier but also more genuine.

How will this project impact them?

This resource would help our students in the short term by creating activities that are engaging while teaching core science subjects such as simple machines and basic laws of physics while also delving into deeper subjects including engineering and roller coaster physics. By having engaging and tactile resources, teaching these abstract topics becomes a lot more tangible, real, and most importantly, easy to understand. Being able to connect an abstract concept to a physical activity makes the learning more successful over the long-term.

    Project Report

    from Mrs. Mann

We have been using our new equipment in my class to learn about coding and to learn about science in hands-on ways that were not previously accessible to us. Thanks to these resources, our students have figured out that science is fun and so many of them regularly get excited about doing things that they didn't realize they could before. They have worked with our STEM kits and our K'nex kits to build and explore about so many areas of science and physics, specifically. It has been amazing for me as a teacher to see my students have those ah-ha moments and to finally figure out concepts that otherwise would be flat and impossible to really understand. It would be like trying to explain how to do a sport without ever watching or playing it--it would remain a mystery wrapped in a cloud.

I have been teaching at Webster's Corners Elementary for 3 years and I am so pleased to call this my "forever school" after 8 years of layoffs. I started off teaching high school biology and though I've been an elementary teacher for 5 years, I will always have a little attachment to my...
