    My Students

Members of the Tofield Outdoor Education and Conservation Club (TOECC) are students from Tofield School that participate in this extracurricular opportunity. They range from grade 10 through grade 12 and have various backgrounds. All of them have a keen interest in getting outdoors and in conservation initiatives. They also have strong work ethic and drive to help out our community, province and country through outreach and conservation efforts.

How will this project impact them?

Every year the Tofield Outdoor Education and Conservation Club (TOECC) embarks on a weekend camping trip somewhere in Alberta. This year, our crew is headed to stunning William A. Switzer Provincial Park, nestled in Alberta's upper foothills. We will be camping in tents, exploring the park and participating in a number of guided and unguided explorations of this amazing provincial park. Students will be responsible for keeping an organized and clean camp, cooking food and participating in all events throughout the weekend. Successful funding of this project will allow us to fund our transportation for the weekend (a school bus), thus making it more financially accessible for everyone (we are hoping to keep the cost of this trip under $50 per student for the entire 3-day weekend)! Previous participants in the camping trip have gone on to pursue environmental studies in post secondary.

    Project Report

    from Mr. Manchak

The assistance with busing costs supplied by our myclassneeds project allowed us to participate in an unforgettable weekend at William A. Switzer Provincial Park. We started of the weekend with a little excitement when our bus managed to get a flat tire about halfway to the park. A quick tire change and we were on the road again.

Our students enjoyed a beautiful weekend spent hiking, tent camping, exploring, sitting around campfires and generally soaking in the beauty of Alberta's foothills. Students walked away from the weekend with many great memories that I'm sure will be shared for years to come. Most students were completely in awe of the beauty of our surroundings. One student even had the opportunity to catch her first fish!

Receiving help to cover the cost of our bus helped us offset other costs for the trip. This ensured that every student was able to participate for an entire weekend at a minimal cost of $50 per student. Ultimately, students learned a lot Alberta's foothills and spent a great weekend camping in and exploring one of the most spectacular spots in the province.

Here are some thoughts from TOECC participants:
Alyssa K. - "We went on hikes, fished, and spent quality time with each other around the campfire. We also had a conservation officer give us tips on bear safety. She inspired me to seek a position in provincial parks as a conservation officer."

Haley R. - "I have learned greatly from my experiences in TOECC and grown a greater appreciation for the natural world. In a society so focused on technology I believe it is important to go out and explore nature as it may not always be there as we continue to destroy habitats. My time in TOECC has made a wonderful addition to my wanting to study biology."

Thank you for supporting the Tofield Outdoor Education and Conservation Club!

After nearly a decade of teaching, I have found that some of the greatest experiences you can have with your students are to be found when you get them out of the classroom. With that in mind, I created TOECC 5 years ago to do just that. When I'm not out of the classroom chasing student...
