  • My Class Needs fitbits to reduce obesity & engage in environment

    Launched December 16th, 2016 Project Deadline March 1st, 2017
Classroom Size 27 Students School Size 500 Students

    My Students

The students are an engaged interested group of grade fives who love their technology but are not physically active. We will be going on many environmental excursions, one of which is going to a First Nations village and snowshoeing. I'd like them to make use of fitbits to become more aware of their activity levels during these excursions.

How will this project impact them?

The fitbits will help students become engaged with their activity level during our environmental awareness and also when we are at school. I will be taking students on nature walks in our nearby creek area and allowing them to improve their fitness and health while interacting with the local environment. Hopefully this also spurs the school community who is very involved in their children's lives to also become more aware of environment and the fitness of their children. If this campaign is successfull students will see environmental changes in our nearby areas as well as hopefully improve rising obesity levels.

    Project Report

    from Mrs. Sparling

We have really just begun our trial of the fitbits. However they are a wonderful resource and we are seeing huge improvements right away. For example at the beginning of our trial students were averaging about 6000 steps a day. When they began to try the resources in groups and compete with one another all of a sudden they began to average more than 20000 steps per day. One child now regularly achieves more than 30000 steps per day and will spend his recess running around. Now students consistently try to get more steps during the day, even by using a stepper that is in the classroom while they are reading. I have also begun to notice improvements in student focus when they are more active with them being more aware and having sharper mental focus. We cycle the fitbits on and off for five days with each student getting a chance every five weeks. They are an excellent tool and something that really helps kids to get more active (especially when their teacher is on a fitbit and can encourage their activity).
    From a grade 5 student:
Dear Fitbit Donors, we are very grateful for your generosity. We appreciate having the fitbits. Having fitibits in our classroom has helped us become more healthy and active. We use our fitbits outside, in gym class, and even when we silent read. Thank you very much for our fitbits. Sincerely a very fit students from Mrs. Sparling's very fit class!
    From another student:
We are always using them, we even have a stepper now in our room to use during our reading times so that we can move while reading. Mrs. Sparling says something about how this helps our brains work even more. Thanks so much!

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
