  • My Class Needs My class needs garden and science tools to explore the outdoors and build a garden.

    Launched November 24th, 2016 Project Deadline February 7th, 2017
Classroom Size 13 Students School Size 125 Students

    My Students

Our students are eager and active learners who enjoy being in our Outdoor Classroom to learn. They have a love of plants and animals and enjoy observing and recording their outdoor findings. Many of our students live in apartment buildings and areas that do not allow for growing vegetable or flower gardens.

How will this project impact them?

The resources will be used to help establish and maintain a garden that we are beginning to create in our Outdoor Learning area. Students will use these materials to weed, water, and care for the plants that will provide beauty and food for the students in our school. In the short term students will learn how to plant the garden, take care of the plants and establish a love for gardening. Long term students will see the importance and impact for gardening on us and the animals in our environment such as bees. Building knowledge and skills in gardening will give students an opportunity to experience authentic learning and teach the importance and impact of plants on our ecosystem. We can then continue to build on that foundation and instill a lifelong love for the environment.

    Project Report

    from Mrs. Whittington

We have been enjoying the new resources that Copernicus funded. All the rain has given our students the opportunity to explore worms and potato bugs using the magnifying glasses and bugnoculars. Students are engaged and learning to look closely at the features of the insects. The gardening tools and wheelbarrows are a fantastic addition to our Outdoor Learning area. We have the opportunity to plant and dig in our yard. Students enjoy exploring and watching the success of their gardens. It has been exciting to watch students engage in learning in a hands on way and outdoors.

Our Kindergarten students are so excited to look at bugs closely and we often hear "Look I found a worm. Let's look closely with the magnifying glass." or "May I have a bugnocular please. We found a potato bug can we keep it and discover it." Our students are asking questions and wondering about the things they see. It has been such a blessing to have the resources in our school and watch the growth of our students.
