  • My Class Needs Flexible Seating materials to to engage students in learning

    My Students

I am third grade teacher and I usually teach a class of approximately 25 to 30 students every year. One thing that all elementary teachers agree on is the fact that elementary students cannot stay still at their assigned desk, they have a constant need to move around. Having “Flexible Seating” in the classroom will increase the student’s level of interest as having different seating options will allow to move around and be comfortable while learning. Some of my students are extremely energetic and they are constantly asking me whether they can do their work while standing or while seating on the floor. By offering them different learning environment options, it will increase their motivation.

How will this project impact them?

A few years ago, when I was doing my internship, the grade 2 class that I was teaching was using the “Flexible Seating” system and it made me realize that students work better when they get to choose their work area. One of my colleague also experimented the same thing and told me that ever since she has been using the “Flexible Seating” system, the student’s grades have greatly improved. On top of that they seem happier and more engaged; their participation level has increased and they are having more invigorating conversations. In my classroom, the students can choose from three seating’s options. They can either seat at their assigned desk or stand next to it or choose to seat on the floor. While it is great that they already have those three options to choose from, I would like to offer them a greater variety of seating’s options; that greater variety being “Flexible Seating.” Brain research confirms that physical activity such as moving, stretching, and walking can actually enhance the learning process. The brain learns best and retains most when the organism is actively involved in physical activity. This, then goes to reinforce the idea that “Flexible Seating” is perfect for learning.

    * Fulfillment Materials: This covers the physical costs of processing teacher and student thank-you letters and pictures, including printing, postage, labels, envelopes, cover sheets, etc.

** Payment Processing Fee: An average of fees charged to MyClassNeeds for processing donations (e.g. credit card payments through a secure server). We have worked hard to select the most secure option for the cost.

*** Optional Donation: An optional donation to support MyClassNeeds which is calculated at 15% of the project’s price tag. The optional contribution supports the work we do to engage teachers, build awareness, and to generally run MyClassNeeds. To do that we need a world- class website supported by strong business systems and processes that improve over time.
